In biting cold temperatures with gusting winds up to 33 mph, as the sun tried poking its head beyond the clouds on occasion, thousands of the faithful gathered along Woodward Avenue, bundled up in scarves and gloves, to watch the annual Detroit Thanksgiving Parade on Thursday morning.

There were the usual floats and a shivering crowd of people, some of whom wore Lions gear — a reminder of the big game against the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field later in the day.

It was, as former Michigan State student Terry Vanderveen would say on bitter cold days in East Lansing, “a chili dog.”
