Two men have been charged in the June 27 high-profile shooting at Skinner Playfield park on Detroit's east side near Denby High School that killed a four-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, and wounded a 17-year-old male. Authorities say the shooting stemmed from an earlier incident on a bus.
Brandon Lee Ware, 18, and William McKinley Wheeler, 19, face two counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, two counts of discharge from a vehicle causing death, one count of discharge from a vehicle causing serious injury, and five counts of felony firearm.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said the shooting was in retaliation for an earlier altercation on a bus, during which someone snatched a ski mask off Ware’s head.
Ware exited the bus and later rode as a passenger in a truck driven by Wheeler.
They drove to Dutchess Street, where Ware allegedly fired at individuals in the park whom he believed were involved in the bus incident, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
He ended up fatally shooting Samir Josiah Grubbs, 4, and Davlyon Shalmonson-Bey, 18, who was unarmed, and wounding a 17-year-old male in the leg. The 17-year-old was also unarmed.
Samir was at the park with his mother, her friend, and his four siblings.
