A 16-year-old male was fatally shot by police Thursday night on Detroit's east side after he shot an officer in the hand during a struggle, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said at a press conference. The officer is expected to recover.

The incident began around 10:30 p.m. when police approached three young people wearing masks standing by the side of a building. Bettison said there had been a rash of break-ins in the neighborhood.

One suspect, 16, was immediately detained, and the other two fled on foot, Bettison said. Officers caught up to one of the teens, and a struggle ensued with an officer.

According to Bettison, the teen produced a .40-caliber handgun with an extended magazine and shot the officer in the left hand. Police returned fire, killing the teen. The third suspect remains at large.

An extended magazine on a gun allows for more bullets to be held than the standard magazine.

Bettison said the teens were violating curfew. But actually, the curfew for 16 year olds is 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. The incident happened around 10:30 p.m.
