Saunteel Jenkins
With the Aug. 5 primary about a month away, the Detroit News editorial board has weighed in on the Detroit mayoral election with an endorsement of Saunteel Jenkins, the former president of the City Council.
The News writes:
We believe Detroit has the best chance to continue its progress with Saunteel Jenkins at the helm.
Jenkins, 54, has the maturity, experience, and temperament to hold the city together and keep it moving forward.
She spent five years on the Detroit City Council and was its president during the bankruptcy period, giving her firsthand experience with the consequences of poor decision-making. She was considered a leader who could build productive relationships both on the council and with the city's various stakeholders.
The editorial acknowledges the strengths of some of the other candidates but ultimately argues that Jenkins would make the best mayor.
Last week, the Detroit Free Press endorsed City Council President Mary Sheffield for mayor.
