Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, made official what everyone expected: She's running for the U.S. Senate.

“It’s official, Michigan. I’m running to be your next United States senator," she announced on X on Tuesday. "Michiganders are the hardest-working people I know. We built this country and the middle class, and I’m running to have their backs in Washington. Let’s get to work."

"Donald Trump said he 'couldn't care less' if auto prices rise because of his tariffs," she wrote. "Well, as someone who’s spent her life fighting for Michigan workers and our auto industry, I couldn’t care more."

Stevens, 41, joins the Democratic race to replace the retiring Sen. Gary Peters, along with state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, 38, and Abdul El-Sayed, 40, a physician who until recently was the head of the Detroit Health Department.

In 2022, Stevens easily knocked off Andy Levin in the primary for the 11th Congressional seat. She had the financial backing of Jewish groups who were concerned that Levin, who is Jewish, was too critical of Israel. They saw Stevens, who is not Jewish, as a stronger supporter of that nation.

Her Congressional bio states:

Congresswoman Haley Stevens was born in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and graduated from Seaholm High School in Birmingham. She earned a master’s degree in social policy and philosophy and a bachelor’s in political science and philosophy from American University.

Before being elected to Congress, Congresswoman Stevens served as the Chief of Staff to the U.S. Auto Rescue Task Force, the federal initiative responsible for saving General Motors, Chrysler, and 200,000 Michigan Jobs. She also played a crucial role in setting up the Office of Recovery for Automotive Communities and Workers and the White House Office of Manufacturing Policy. After serving in the Obama Administration, Congresswoman Stevens worked in a manufacturing research lab focused on the future of work in the digital age.
