Former Michigan Republican Mike Cox is considering a run for governor, the first big name in the GOP to indicate an interest in the office in 2026.

The Detroit News reports that Cox, 62, of Livonia, has formed a campaign committee to run for governor but was stopping short of announcing his intention to run. He said he was "seriously looking at it."

The last gubernatorial election in 2022 included a number of Republican candidates in the primary, but some, including former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, were booted from the race due to bad signatures on their election petitions.

Ultimately, the nominee in 2022, Tudor Dixon, needed  the backing of Donald Trump, and had to say that there were problems with the 2020 presidential election.

On the other side, Secretary of State Jocelyn has expressed interest in the Democratic nomination as has Transporation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an Independent.
