The Detroit City Council this week aproved $142 milion in tax breaks for a 25-story, 600-room hotel on the riverfront at the former Joe Louis site. A pedestrian bridge will connect the hotel to to the Huntington Place Convention Center.
The principal devleoper for "Hotel at Water Square" is the Sterling Group, a real estate development and investment firm founded by Gary Torgow, who is chairman of Huntington National Bank.
The hotel will include a ground floor restaurant, a lobby bar, two ballrooms, meeting rooms, a swimming pool, spa and fitness area. It will be next to the new Residences at Water Square, a high-end 25-story, 500-unit apartment building.
"Thank you to our City Council for unanimously approving the Hotel at Water Square," Mayor Mike Duggan posted on X on Tuesday. "This moves the city forward as a contender. Thank you to the SterlingGroup for their vision in this newly constructed $400m world class, 600 rooms, 4 star convention hotel."
In a posting on its website, the city of Detroit stated:
"Detroit is at a significant disadvantage when competing for convention business, as the number of rooms within walking distance of the convention center and not having a connected hotel is a major concern of all meeting planners."
